The Distinguished Dietitian Award recognizes outstanding service to NYSDA and the profession of dietetics.

Outstanding Dietetics Educator for a DI program

The purpose of the Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award program is to recognize the teaching, mentoring, and leadership activities of faculty and preceptors for an ADA-accredited and approved dietetics education program. Each area’s Dietetics Educators of Practitioners group may recognize one Outstanding Educator for each type of dietetics program. The recipient of this award is nominated by NYSDA but selected by ADA.

Isabelle A. Hallahan Award for Excellence in Food Service

The Isabelle A. Hallahan Award for Excellence in Food Service recognizes the provision of quality food service by a female dietitian. The award honors both the recipient, and Isabelle Hallahan, a fearless leader in the field of dietetics.

Emerging Dietetic Leader Award

The Emerging Dietetic Leader award recognizes the accomplishments of dietitians, regardless age, who have made distinctive contributions to ADA early in their dietetics career. Recipients must be a member of ADA and an active participant in state and district associations for at least 5 years, but no greater than 10 years.

Media Excellence Award

The Media Excellence Award recognizes media involvement for at least three years that promotes scientifically sound nutrition information and the profession of dietetics.

The Jack Bellick Award

The Jack Bellick Award is granted by the New York State Dietetic Association to honor both the recipient and Mr. Bellick. Its purpose is to recognize the consistent participation of a student member or active member (credentialed within the past 3 years) in district or state activities.

Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year (RYDY)

Courtney SantagataCourtney Santagata, MS, RD, CDN

Courtney is highly dedicated to the field of dietetics, specializing as an Oncology Clinical Dietitian at Yale New Haven Hospital. There, she provides nutrition education and support for oncology patients, precepts twelve dietetic interns annually, and is currently part of the strategy team to transition oncology care to Smilow Cancer Hospital, which will open in October of this year.
As an active member of the coordinating cabinet of GNYDA, Courtney has been the webmaster for the past six years, and has been involved with the GNYDA Public Relations Committee for the past four. In the past, she has also served as newsletter editor for GNYDA, and has been on NYSDA's Annual Meeting Exhibit Committee.


Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year (RYDY)

Melissa BuczekMelissa Buczek, MS, RD, CDN

Melissa Buzcek is a devoted dietitian in the field of corporate wellness. Currently she is the Clinical Product Specialist at WellPoint, Inc, where she is helping to create a childhood fitness program, managing 20 associates, and is responsible for the clinical content, research, review, design, and development of the product. WellPoint has already recognized Melissa’s excellence by awarding her the WellPoint Impact Award for outstanding demonstration of the “One Company, One Team” core value program. Active in both NYSDA and GNYDA, Melissa has served as a NYSDA Membership Chair for the past five years, and served twice as the Annual Meeting Exhibits Co-Chair (thank you Melissa). With GNYDA, she currently serves as the President-Elect, for which she has devoted many hours to planning networking night, and the Mary Swartz Rose Lecture. She also has been an active PR Committee Member for the past 7 years, a contributor to “The Greater New Yorker,” GNYDA’s newsletter, and in the past has served as Secretary and Membership Chair. In addition to WellPoint, and her involvement with NYSDA and GNYDA, Melissa is also on the Junior Committee of the Alzheimer’s Association, and a New York Road Runners Club Member.



Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year (RYDY)

Theresa AmborskiTheresa Amborski, RD, CNSD

Theresa Amborski has worked in Clinical Nutrition since 2001, and is currently the Clinical Nutrition Manager at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, New York, where she manages a staff of 20 Clinical Nutrition employees, is a preceptor for dietetic interns, manages an annual budget, and educates her associates and Nursing staff on the current, and best practices in nutrition. She has worked to improve the system at Mercy Hospital by developing a diet software database, transitioning them to a cook/serve system, and has thereby increased patient satisfaction. As an active member of the ADA, NYSDA, and WNYDA, Theresa has participated in two ADA Calls to Action, and is a current NYSDA Media Representative. In this capacity, she was the guest dietitian earlier this year on an episode of “Our Daily Bread,” and the Feature Dietitian for last year’s Tour: “Chief Health Officer Got Milk?.”




Outstanding Dietetics Educator

Susan TravisSusan Travis

SusanTravis has been a devoted educator of dietetics at Cornell University for the past 11 years. She also counsels privately for youth and adults, specializing in eating disorders, weight management, and sports nutrition. In her time at Cornell, she began as a Lecturer, teaching Nutrition Communications and Counseling, Nutrition and Exercise, and Community Nutrition in Action, which she (lucky for those students) still continues to do AND has also served as the Director of Dietetics, and the Director of the Dietetic Internship. Interns at Cornell consistently rate their experiences with Sue as one of the highlights of their internship, and elaborate that her exemplary mentoring allows them to grow in both skill and confidence. She is recognized by her students as compassionate, wise, engaging, and inspiring.

In addition to being a true Outstanding Dietetics Educator, Sue is a highly active leader in the field of dietetics. She has published research papers, peer-reviewed research articles, nutrition education materials, technical reports, and co-authored a chapter on Eating Disorders in the Saunders Manual of Pediatrics Practice She is also a leader in the New York State Nutrition Council, and was a previous legislative chair for the Nutrition Education Public Practice Group. Sue's dedication to the community has also been recognized as she was awarded the Reverend Jack Lewis Award for exemplary service to community members in crisis, and the Best Practice Team Award in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program by the USDA.


 

Student Awards

Matthew NultyOutstanding Student In Dietetic Internship Program Matthew Nulty

Matthew Nulty received his BS in Nutritional Sciences from Cornell University last year with an amazing GPA of 3.92. He is currently completing his DI at Hunter College CUNY, while also earning his MPH in Public Health Nutrition.
Letters of recommendation attest to Matthew’s intelligence, professionalism, ease with communication, and leadership. Matthew’s commitment to the profession is reflected in his involvement in organizations such as the National Student Council Advisory Committee, where he serves as the CADE Representative, and the National Organization of Men in Nutrition. It is also thanks to Matthew’s insight and vision as an undergraduate at Cornell University, that there is now an existing Cornell University Dietetic Association, consisting of a Student Council Liaison to the ADA. His volunteer work includes, SchoolFood, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center.



Michelle Denton Outstanding Dietetic Student - Didactic Program
Michelle Denton

Michelle Denton is in her senior year at Cornell University, where she is completing her B.S. in Nutritional Sciences.
Michelle's professors at Cornell praise her dedication, critical thinking skills, enthusiasm, and her impressive ability to facilitate group interactions, which we all know is not always an easy task.
Michelle has demonstrated dedicated service as a volunteer at the Cayuga Medical Center, and for WIC.
An already established and confident leader, Michelle co-founded the Cornell University Dietetic Association and is the current Student Council Liaison to the ADA. She has remarkably participated in extensive research on Vitamin E content in different varieties of corn, for which she has created four posters to present at various conferences, as well as prepared data for a grant proposal.

 

Danielle PacellaOutstanding Dietetic Student Award - Coordinated Program
Danielle Pacella

Danielle Pacella is currently excelling in her fourth year as a dietetic student in the coordinated BS/MS program at D'Youville College, with a cumulative GPA of 3.99.
Letters of recommendation highlight Danielle's intelligence, diligence, and leadership.
Danielle's involvement in the ADA, and WNYDA is remarkable. She is currently serving as the WNYDA Board of Directors Student Representative, is a Student Council Member of the ADA, and a member of various DPGs. Danielle is also the Student Dietetic Association current President at D'Youville. Her leadership skills were recognized by her professors when they recently nominated her for the JW Perry Leadership Award. Danielle has not only involved herself with the school, and the ADA, but also with the community. She has volunteered for the Mercy Hospital Health Fair, Friends of the Night People Soup Kitchen, and the Battered Women's Shelter.

 

Rosemarie DiasOutstanding Dietetic Tech Student
Rosemarie Dias

Rosemarie received her BS in Dietetics, Foods, and Nutrition Sciences from Mercy College, and is expected to complete her Associate in Applied Science Degree as a Dietetic Technician from Westchester Community College this July.
Rosemarie’s recommendations all provide accolades to her professionalism, enthusiasm, and involvement in the dietetics profession. Already a member of the nutrition workforce, Rosemarie is currently a nutrition counselor at the Personal Training Institute, where she is a powerful motivator and educator for her clients. Serving as a Student Senator and current President of the Foods and Nutrition Club at Westchester Community College, she has shown leadership and initiative. Rosemarie has also demonstrated exceptional involvement in nutrition education through the Westchester County Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Food PATCH by organizing programs for Health Awareness Day, breast cancer awareness, as well as participating in the Martha Sloan Greenawaldt Mentoring program for young women.

Distinguished Dietitian

Constance Brown RiggsDistinguished Dietitian
Constance Brown Riggs, MSEd, RD, CDE, CDN

Connie Brown Riggs is the principal of CBR Nutrition Enterprises in Massapequa, New York, where she offers complete medical nutrition therapy for health maintenance and disease prevention. Prior to her work in private practice, Connie worked as Teacher, Therapeutic Dietitian, and Supervision Manager for 30 years at Brunswick Psychiatric Hospital. Connie is heavily involved in her work as a Certified Diabetes Educator. She helped develop the Diabetes Prevention & Management in Adult Care Facilities training curriculum at New York State Office of Children & Family Services Bureau of Training, provides MNT at South Shore Diabetes & Endocrinology, is a consultant for Lilly's Diabetes and Osteoporosis Interactive Networks, and is the Featured Expert on CNBC's dLifeTV, the first national program dedicated to people living with diabetes and their families.

Connie is also an educator and mentor for young dietitians. She is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Suffolk Community College, Proctor at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, and Preceptor at both Suffolk County Community College, and CW Post at Long Island University.
Connie has been highly profiled in the media as well. She has appeared on television numerous times discussing diabetes, and has been interviewed by Readers Digest, Newsday, Essence Magazine, and Real Health Magazine. Connie is the author of "Eating Soulfully and Healthfully with Diabetes," which was published in 2006, and has written for the ADA, IMARA Woman Magazine, Gulf Coast Bariatric.com, and a chapter in "Food and Cultural Issues for the Culinary, Hospitality, and Nutrition Professions," which will be published next month!

If you have been involved with NYSDA or LIDA at all in the past 20 years, chances are likely that you have seen Connie around. In LIDA, she began as the Fund-raising Chair for 2 terms, and then on to be the Chairs of Legislation, PR, and Reimbursement for two years, before moving on to the Presidential roles. During her President-Elect year at LIDA, she began to take on additional leadership roles within NYSDA as the PR Chair for the Annual Meeting, and then on to Professional Issues, Alliance Taskforce, PR Chair, and then on to the Presidential positions from 2003 – 2006. Her dedication to NYSDA did not stop once her term had ended. After her term as Immediate Past President, Connie took on the role of Website Taskforce Chair, which she led for 2 years. Presently Connie is ending her 2 year term on the Nominating Committee for ADA is an ADA's African American Nutrition Special national spokesperson.


 

Isabelle Hallahan Award

Soghra Naheed Ali-Sayeed, MS, RD, CNSD, CDN

Soghra Naheed Ali-Sayeed is a clinical dietitian with 15 years experience, an Adjunct Faculty member at Buffalo State College, and presently the Clinical Nutrition Manager at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Soghra took it upon herself to become involved in the Food Service operations in order to meet the nutrition and dietary needs of her patients. Working with the Food Service Manager, she has revolutionized the service at Mercy Hospital by implementing room service, training new food service staff, developing a Volunteer Feeding program "Forks and Spoons," which assists patients who need help eating, and designing a large restaurant style menu from which patients' visitors can order. She is also responsible for part of the food and nutrition budget, overseeing clinical dietitians, and mentoring the clinical dietetic students as preceptor during their Food Service Management and Clinical rotations.
Outside of work, Soghra is an exemplary community leader. She serves on the Board of Ken-Ton Meals on Wheels, the Advisory Board of the University of Buffalo Dietetic Internship Program, and was a program planner for the Healthy Strides Community Initiative. She is an active member of WNYDA, and currently the Professional Issues Chair-Elect
.

Legislative Advocacy Award

Karen Ostrum

Karen Ostrum, MS, RD, CDE

Karen has been the Director of Food and Nutrition Services at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for the past 6 years, where she has worked to provide exceptional service to patients and residents, as well as create a Nutrition Committee, Medical Nutrition Therapy and insurance reimbursements for out patients, and implement a Community Health curriculum for adults and children. In addition, Karen is a co-founder of the Western New York Consortium for Nutrition Support, served on Niagara Falls City School district's Wellness Committee for 2 year, and has served on the Niagara Wheatfield and Grand Island School districts' Wellness Committees for the past 3.

Karen has been a remarkable leader in NYSDA and WNYDA for the past 20 years. Starting out as the Recording Secretary of WNYDA, she has also served as their President, and member of the Council on Practice. In NYSDA, Karen has previously served as the Annual Meeting Co-Chair, Program Planning Chair, Recording Secretary, and Legislative Network Coordinator. She was NYSDA's Delegate to the ADA for 6 years, and has been our Licensure Taskforce Chair for 4. As the Licensure Taskforce Chair, Karen succeeded in introducing a Licensure Bill for nutrition professionals to the Senate and Assembly, which was passed twice in the NYS Senate, ,has met and continues to meet regularly with key leaders to move licensure efforts forward, and created a strategic initiative to increase NYSDA presence and participation in the NYS regulatory process. She has attended and assisted in 4 NYSDA Public Policy Workshops.
