Distinguished Dietitian (1 Award)

  • Recognizes outstanding service to NYSDA and the profession of dietetics. 
  • Must be a member of ADA a minimum of 10 years and currently a member of NYSDA and a district affiliate, usually an RD, but a non-RD may be considered.

Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year (3 Awards) 

  • Recognizes the accomplishments of young dietitians. 
  • Must be member of ADA, NYSDA and a district affiliate. 
  • Must be 35 years of age or younger as of March 31, in the year of the award

Recognized Dietetic Technician of the Year (1 Award) 

  • Recognizes the accomplishments of dietetic technicians 
  • Must be member of ADA, NYSDA and a district affiliate 
  • No age restriction is associated with this award.

Emerging Dietetics Leader (1 Award) 

  • Recognizes the accomplishments of dietitians regardless of their age who have made distinctive contributions to ADA early in their dietetics career. 
  • Must be a member of ADA and an active participant in state and district associations for at least 5 years, but no greater than 10 years.

Isabelle A. Hallahan Award (1 Award)

  • Recognizes accomplishments by a female dietitian working directly in a food service management capacity. 
  • Must be a member of ADA, registered or eligible for registration and has or is pursuing a masters degree in food service management or related field.

Jack Bellick Award (1 Award) 


Media Excellence Award (1 Award) 

  • Recognizes media involvement for at least three years that promotes scientifically sound nutrition information and the profession of dietetics. 
  • Must be a member of ADA and NYSDA.

Excellence in Legislative Advocacy (1 Award) 

  • Recognizes at least three years of active involvement and leadership in legislation and public policy development that promotes the profession of dietetics. 
  • Must be a member of ADA and NYSDA but cannot be a current state or district LNC or Reimbursement Chair in the year nominated for the award.

Outstanding Dietetics Educator

  • Recognizes teaching, mentoring and leadership activities of faculty and preceptors. 
  • Must be an educator or preceptor for an ADA-accredited or approved dietetics education program. 
  • One educator from each program type will be selected.

Outstanding Dietetics Student

Special Instructions for Outstanding Student Award In Addition to General Instructions:

  • Submit the student’s resume that documents experience, honors received, community service, etc.
  • Include a copy of the student’s transcript.
  • Submit two (2) letters from faculty members or preceptors documenting the academic and professional achievements and the potential of the student.

Ruth Harmon Award 
(1 Award - no directions or forms beyond what is written here) 

This student award is a memorial to Ruth Harmon, one of the NYSDA's pioneers in legislative and public policy activities who died in 1994. This award pays $1000 toward expenses to attend the ADA Legislative and Public Policy Workshop in Washington DC. The recipient must submit a brief article about the experience for the NYSDA Bulletin. 

Applicants should submit the following to apply (no application form for this award): 

  • A letter that describes the applicant's interest in legislation and public policy, legislative activities pursued by the applicant as an undergraduate or during the DI/AP-4, CP, DPD, DT program and how the applicant will incorporate legislative and public policy activities into his/her professional life. 
  • An essay of approximately 800-1000 words, double-spaced, on the following: how would you persuade dietetics students and practitioners that the statement "if nutrition is your profession, then politics is your business" is relevant to them? 
  • A letter of recommendation from the Director of the DI/AP-4, CP, DPD, DT programs.
  • Application deadline, December 30
